Château Gruaud Larose – Saint-Julien – Red – 1990:
The Pedigree of Saint-Julien: Château Gruaud Larose
As a Second Growth from the historic 1855 Classification, Château Gruaud Larose commands respect. This Saint-Julien estate consistently produces a Grand Vin of immense concentration and longevity, perfectly capturing the classic, age-worthy style of the Left Bank. It truly lives up to its motto: ‘King of Wines, Wine of Kings’.
Tasting Notes & Character
The core of Gruaud Larose is its powerful Cabernet Sauvignon structure, beautifully balanced by Merlot. This is a wine that rewards patience:
- Appearance: Deep, impressive crimson with excellent depth.
- Aroma: A concentrated bouquet of dark berries (black cherry, cassis) when young, developing into layered tertiary notes of antique leather, truffle, pencil shavings, and sweet cedar spice.
- Flavour: Full and authoritative on the palate, showcasing a dense core of fruit framed by firm, yet refined tannins. The wine maintains a brilliant freshness (acidity), leading to a persistent and complex finish.
Food Matching & Enjoyment
A true Sunday Roast or game bird wine. Best served following a couple of hours in a decanter to allow the powerful structure to soften. Serve slightly cooler than room temperature.
